PRINCIPALS REPORT
This year we saw the release of the 2018 – 2021 Department of Education Strategic Plan. The commitment, values and goals align with our school improvement plan. Concerning the benefits, we have adopted the same language as the Department of Education. As we make these adjustments, I am sure students will be using the language of the new values very soon, if not already and you will hear students use words like;
Aspiration – A CULTURE OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND HIGH ACHIEVEMENT;
Growth – IMPROVING BY ALWAYS LEARNING AND FINDING BETTER WAYS TO DO THINGS;
Courage – ACCEPTING CHALLENGES AND EMBRACING OPPORTUNITIES;
Respect – RESPECTING OURSELVES, OTHERS, OUR PAST AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.
As you can see the values and understandings behind them are similar in many ways to our old values of, Positive Relationships, Be Respectful, Be a Learner and Be Safe. Many schools have the same values, so why the change? The rationale behind the change is to have a whole system approach. To give an example, if a teacher moves from St Marys to another government school, they will be immediately familiar with the new school's values, or a student transfers to another school in the state they will be familiar with the language and understanding of their new school and its values.
The picture shows the administration area’s floor replaced with a new concrete and level floor. The new building works are coming along nicely and starting to take shape. The builders are on track to have stage one completed by week 2 of Term 3 which is exciting for students and staff.
The picture shows the rotton wooden floor in the old hall, which is now being replaced with a new wooden floor. This building was originally designed to support a smaller school site, however, over time the school has outgrown the aging facilities.
The inclement weather last week didn’t impact heavily on the site works. Apart from plumbing issues, and the accidental cutting of our fibre optic cable into the school, the building works are still on target for an end of school year completion and our end of year assembly will be held in the new performing arts building.
A special thank you to Kate from L J Hooker, St Helens for a donation of $500 to our new timing clock for the swimming pool. The success of our swimming team this year is clearly evident by the hard work displayed by students and teachers. The timing clock will provide another resource to assist with their training regimes.

INTER-HIGH SWIMMING CHAMPIONS 2018
I’m sure everyone is now aware of the school’s enormous swimming achievement at the Inter High on Tuesday 27th March 2018. This accomplishment is not only a result of all our efforts and hard work but is also a true reflection of our school values and mottos.
We set ourselves high expectations and standards and were determined and motivated to reach those goals. We aspired to be competitive and win and be promoted to Division 1 again and have another red-hot crack.
We developed and improved our individual abilities and performance but also grew as a swimming team.
We respected each other, our coaches and what was expected of us as a part of the training program but also respecting the opposition. It was awesome to see everyone supporting each other’s achievements within our school but also congratulating the other swimmers on their achievements and success.
Having the courage to challenge and extend ourselves out of our personal comfort zones is reflective of our school values working. I would like to mention Sam Jordan and Matilda Harvey on their efforts in the 50m Butterfly who stepped in and swam to the best of their ability and I personally felt so proud to be wearing that St Marys School Cap and being part of this great school. A few of us were vomiting during the event due to nerves and adrenalin as well as an asthma attack whilst swimming but we fought through that and we continued to represent our school with pride and courage.
We are an isolated, rural school with limited resources compared to other schools we were competing against and we punch well above our weight.
I think I speak on behalf of all swimmers when I say that Mr Wardlaw and Mrs Fyle deserve a special acknowledgment for all of their hard work in preparing us and training us for both swimming carnivals. We cannot express how grateful and appreciative we all are for your time, commitment and dedication. Also thank you to Mrs Swanson and Miss Redden for your input in Physical Education and your support at the Inter High.
We were also very lucky to be given specialist swimming training from Milt Nelms, who is a world-renowned swimming coach having had large involvements with the US Olympic swim team.
All of the hard work and the long hours spent training was definitely reflected in the final results in the pool with a dominating performance by all swimmers including a large number of records being broken in our school swimming carnival, a total of 21 records over a course of two years, ten being broken last year and eleven being broken this year and also a relay record being broken at the Inter High. Our hard work and training was well rewarded by our overall success at the Inter High swimming carnival.

Work is progressing on the redevelopment of block 1, with a lot of progress being made over the school holiday period. Window frames are being installed, replacing the drafty old ones with double glazing while maintaining the look of the originals. Major slab pouring is complete and internal framing of the Administration and Support Staff offices has commenced. Structural steel has been installed to support the roof of the hall where both side walls have been removed. Steel work has also been erected for the new lobby/common room and work on the stage has commenced. Thanks must go to Lance Bergman (St Marys District High School Friends) and Fairbrothers for sharing the progress photos with us.
Just as a comparison, the photo gallery below provides an amazing demonstration of the technology and building techniques used during the original construction of the building. Thank you to Mrs Amanda Rossi for going through her family’s historical photos and providing copies. Mrs Rossi’s father, Leith Gatty worked on the original construction of the school and her mother, Mrs Rona Gatty was a long term staff member of our school, who is still well remembered by former students and staff.

ANZAC DAY 2018
Students braved the cold to gather at various Cenotaphs just before dawn to remember the fallen at ANZAC day services around the community, speaking and laying wreaths. At both Bicheno and St Marys, students joined in the march to the Cenotaph, while students wearing their school uniforms gathered in large numbers at the Fingal Cenotaph. It was a pleasure to see so many students and their families taking time out of their school holidays to represent our school so proudly.

PRIMARY CELEBRATION AFTERNOON
There was a buzz of excitement in the Primary area on Tuesday 10th April. Students were eagerly waiting for the afternoon to arrive so that they could spend time with their parents and grandparents. What were they going to do? To begin with, the Primary students at the St Marys Campus held a Mini Assembly where certificates for following our school values of Be Respectful, Be Safe and Be a Learner were handed out. Due to the building works going on, we held this in the Primary Music Space. There was standing room only as our invited guests turned up in droves. After this parents and grandparents were led away by their exuberant children to their respective classrooms. It was clear to see by wandering around the classrooms how much fun the students were having in sharing their work, games they had learned to play and all of the successes they were having in their learning. At the Fingal Campus, parents began to arrive during the lunch break ready to explore and celebrate the learning that their children had completed during Term 1.
Staff and students would like to thank all of the parents for joining us in this afternoon of celebration. We would also like to thank the Grade 9-10 Hospitality students and LIFT for supporting this afternoon by supplying afternoon tea for our guests.

EASTER BONNET PARADE 2018
The St Marys District School Primary Easter Bonnet Parade was held at both campuses on Tuesday 27th March. Children had fun decorating their hats ready for the parade. We were fortunate to have a sunny day. This year we did not issue Easter Eggs for prizes, instead students won a small gift voucher to the value of $5.00 for first prize, to be used at Mark Carrick’s IGA Supermarket at St Marys, $3.00 for second prize donated by Danni and Mark at St Marys Newsagency, and $1.00 for the third prize to be used at Mark Carrick’s IGA Supermarket at St Marys. Thank you to these businesses for supporting our school. All children in Kindergarten, Prep and Grade 1 who participated received a certificate of participation to acknowledge their hard work in designing their bonnets.
Staff and students would also like to acknowledge and thank our parents and grandparents Amanda, Melody, Kaylee, Courtney, Nigel, Nicole and Dana who agreed to judge our hat parade.

PREP-ONE MASON/WILLS
In Prep/One we have been fortunate enough to visit the school farm to visit its newest member, “Daisy”. After our visit, students were keen to draw Daisy. We used a combination of drawing, googly eyes and tissue paper to create our masterpieces that will be sent off to the Campbell Town Show Art Competition. Then we read Hattie and the Fox, by Mem Fox and illustrated by Patricia Mullins, who also uses tissue paper to create her animal artworks in the book. It was loads of fun.

Students have also begun working with Mrs Wills on a Friday. They were quick to get creative, collaboratively making Rapunzel towers after watching a short film on Rapunzel.
What a fabulous start to Term 2!

FINGAL CAMPUS - K/P/1/2/ CLASS
On Thursday May 4th, the K/P/1/2 class were joined by Tanya and Tash from Building Blocks for a healthy cooking lesson. We have been talking about healthy eating habits and this was an opportunity for the students to engage with all facets of the cooking experience. Some of the jobs that the students had to do were, measuring, mixing, cutting, stirring and of course the best part was eating the meal at the end. It was fabulous to see that most of the students tried a food that they had not tried before, some of them liked the new food and some of them didn’t; the most important part was that they tried something new! The two meals that were cooked and prepared were stir fry pork noodles and mango and banana lassies. We have included the recipes for you to try at home.
Lily tried the baby corn and brocolini.
Shelby tried the brocolini.
Layla liked the banana smoothie.
Tayah tried snow peas.
Max tried the snow peas.
Indigo liked the mango smoothie.
Aiden tried tinned baby corn and snow peas.

GRADE 3-4 EXCURSION TO RICHMOND
We got our bags and went to the bus. It took us two and a half hours to get there. We had some recess, then we went to the Richmond Gaol. In the gaol we saw the women’s solitary cells and the men’s solitary cells. In the women’s solitary cells there was a woman sitting in one of the cells. Later we went to the hall and there was a man trap and there was also shackles. After the hall we went to the cooking room. In the cooking room we saw all the cooking tools. After the cooking room we went to the flogging yard and we heard voices saying “Ah, Oh, Ar” and where was the privy. Also Dalton tried to escape the gaol. After the flogging yard, we went to the men’s solitary cells. The cells were dark. This Miss Cook wanted us to stay in the dark cells and Leon and Koby got stuck in the cells. We went and sat on the gravel in the court yard to answer the questions on our sheet of paper.
Then we had lunch at the park. Then we were playing chasies with Dalton, Daniel, Henry, Angus, Koby, Charlotte, Katie, Jaxon and Cooper. Henry chucked a lolly and Daniel, Koby and Angus chased it. Daniel got it but Dalton fell off the equipment so he didn’t try. Angus got stuck in the drain and Daniel laughed but we got him out!
We went to the Old Hobart Town Village Model. When we got there we had to sit out the front and listen to a person. He talked about the convicts in old times and he talked about Hobart when it was old. Then we went inside and had to find four people. One was a lady whacking a snake with a stick. The next one was a Tassie Tiger. The other two were a man who got his foot caught in a trap and the last one was a man kicking a kangaroo. It was hard to find them because the model was really big. Dalton, Daniel, Angus and Henry were looking around and we found two people kissing in the back of a hay bale which was on the back of a trailer. We found three of the people. We found the lady whacking the snake, we found the person stuck in a trap. The last thing we found was the Tassie Tiger. The man who was kicking a kangaroo was hard to find.
We got our bags and went to the bus. It took us two and a half hours to get back. When we got back, we went home.

WHERE? WHERE? WEDGIE?
Students in Grades 5 and 6 have been taking part in a state-wide investigation into the population of wedge tail eagles in the wild. We have been learning more about this fascinating bird, the threats it faces and how to protect it. On May 25th we will take part in a survey of birds in the area, providing real scientific information to the study. Grade 5/6 Williams has been doing some art and information posters about the birds.

Qkr Is Here!
STREAMLINE LUNCH ORDERING WITH OUR NEW CANTEEN APP
It is Friday morning, the kids are running late and you’ve run out of bread. You decide to order lunches but you don’t have any change, so you send your kids to school with a larger amount of cash than you would like with strict instructions to bring home the change. There are several ways this scenario can end: the money is lost, or forgotten in the rush; your children forget to order and miss out on their lunch selection or lunch altogether; they forget about bringing home the change and live the high life for a lunch hour, or they lose their change on the way home.
Meanwhile, at school your child’s teacher is distracted from the morning routine by supervising lunch ordering, and Emma in the canteen is losing food prep time because she is busily collating lunch orders, labelling food bags and dealing with late or forgotten orders.
A SOLUTION IS HERE – WITH QKR CANTEENS ONLINE ORDERING APP
The Qkr (prounounced quicker) canteen app, allows you and your child to pre order and pay for their lunch from the palm of your hand.
Why you’ll like Qkr!
- It is a secure mobile app that allows fast and easy payments
- It gives parents the flexibility to place orders wherever and whenever they like – even in advance!
- It gives parents the ability to manage children’s canteen orders to ensure they’re eating well
- There is no need to load funds in advance
How does it work?
- Simply download the Qkr! app from the App store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android)
- Locate our school
- Register your child’s details on the app. you are then ready to order and pay for canteen orders
For more information, please view the video below, download the brochure or ask our office staff.
Canteen ordering on QKR will be available from Thursday 17th of May. (other payment options demonstrated on the video are not available at this time)
So what are you waiting for? Download and set up the app now!
The Purple Poppy
Dr Jeff from the East Coast Vet Clinic popped in to the School Library for a surprise visit to donate a copy of Nigel Allsopp’s book “The Purple Poppy”, on behalf of the AWAMO (Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation). “The Purple Poppy” is a remembrance of war animals and is beautifully illustrated by Australian Artist Sharon McLachlan. Dr Jeff’s donation arrived right before Anzac Day and he really enjoyed the ANZAC display in our library. Thank you for your donation Dr Jeff.

GRADE 5-6 WILLIAMS - ART
Grade 5/6 Williams was fortunate to have Jayden’s Nan, Judy visit our class to run an art workshop on the 9th May. Judy brought in a variety of natural materials including shells, driftwood and seaweed for the students to work with. They built sculptures, cardboard robots, sketched still life pictures and painted. We had a wonderful time. Thank you to Judy for helping us.
