PRINCIPALS REPORT
As we start the busiest time of the year for schools, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers this year. Without the help of volunteers, parent help and our School Association much of what we do would be extremely challenging. Once again I particularly would like to thank our “School Op Shop” volunteers for the generous amounts of time they spend at the shop raising funds to support the extra layer of things we do. Great work volunteers and on behalf of the school community we deeply thank you.
We are coming to the end of the major work occurring at the school and we are hoping visitors will spend time walking around and seeing first hand this outstanding refurbished facility. The students are already making good use of these newly opened spaces and are demonstrating the respect and care that one would come to expect from our students.
I would like to welcome Sean Bradley who is taking over from Ms Hannah Coates position while she is away on maternity leave. Sean comes with a number of skill sets and will be a great asset to the secondary team.
Arrangements for 2019 are starting to come together. We have a new teacher transferring to St.Marys, Ms Keziah Nunn who will be working in the secondary Maths/Science area. Keziah is known to us from her time here during her UTAS teaching training days a few years ago and we are excited she is joining us again. A number of our secondary staff will be away on maternity leave at the beginning of 2019 and plans are in place to accommodate those who are away. Another change will be Ms Hannah Papworth, who is leaving us and heading to Hobart. We wish her well in her new school.
One other change is that I have decided to retire at the end of the year. This will mean St.Marys will have a new Principal for 2019. The position has already been advertised and applicants are currently being shortlisted. The successful applicant will be known before the end of the school year and I will announce the name of the successful person as soon as I know.
Congratulations to Elise Sliskovic – St.Marys District School on winning a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of outstanding achievement for Top Student of School in National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2018.
Kind Regards
Bruce Campbell

REMEMBRANCE DAY
In Grade1-2 Bennett HASS we watched a video that explained how poppies grew from devastated lands during war time and became a symbol of hope. We created some artwork showing how the poppies brightened the landscape.

GRADE 5-6 WILLIAMS CAMP
5/6A Williams went on camp to Port Arthur on November 7th to 9th. The students were incredibly well behaved and had a blast. Amelia and Jessica have written up everything we did.
5/6A Port Arthur Camp

Wednesday
We all came to school pumped and ready for camp! Grade 5/6 dragged their gear down to the turning circle where Tyson was waiting with the bus. Our stuff was sat under the bus and we climbed into our seats, getting ready for the four and a half hours journey ahead of us.
After a couple of hours on the bus we stopped at Campbell Town for a recess and toilet break, we then drove onto Richmond.
At Richmond we stopped and went to the Richmond Jail before lunch. At the Richmond Jail we divided ourselves into four groups of four people. Each group was given a sheet of stuff to find around the jail. After the jail we had lunch at the park. There were lots of cute little ducklings. Once we had eaten lunch, we either played on the play equipment or went in a small group to the Richmond lolly shop where we were allowed to spend a maximum of five dollars. We then got back on the bus for the last stretch of road before Port Arthur Holiday Park.
At Eaglehawk Neck we stopped for a few minutes to walk along the dog line to the beach. Then it was back on the bus for the last ten to fifteen minutes.
At Port Arthur Holiday Camp we checked in and got settled before we went on the ghost tour. Mrs Williams and Mrs Cook were in bunk house one, the boys in bunkhouse two, girls in bunkhouse three and Matt in four. After we got settled it was time for a taco dinner and mousse then those who wanted to went on the ghost tour. When 5/6 got back we had hot chocolate supper. Groups were made using our numbers that we had been given for the trip to make sure we were all where we were meant to be and each group had a turn of doing the dishes. After, we were sent to get ready for bed when we were ready, we talked until bed time.
Thursday
Once we had breakfast we got ready to walk to Port Arthur Historic Site from the camp. Once we got to Port Arthur Historic Site we went to the visitor centre to wait for our guide. Our guides name was Claire. When we were walking around the ruins, Claire told us about the two bushfires that burnt through the buildings. The first bushfire burnt most of the bricks and the second burnt down more; not as much as the first piece though. After we walked around the site for a few minutes we sat down and learned that girls at the age of twelve got sold off to men for a wife. After the tour we went to the silent house to see what it was like to be there.
After the silent house we made bricks like convicts did. The man teaching us how to said we were very quiet.
Before lunch we played in the information centre where we got cards and had to find the matching convict. For lunch we had a BBQ picnic with games, before we caught the bus back to the holiday park. After a lasagne tea we had a talent show. It was loads of fun! We then had a few rounds of ping pong and dessert. We then had supper.
Friday
We packed up the bunkhouses ready to leave straight after breakfast. We first stopped at the lookout for a few minutes to take some photos. The next time we stopped was at Ross. We had lunch at the Tassie North and South border before walking to the Ross Female Factory and Cemetery.
Port Arthur 5-6A
By Jessica Squires
On Wednesday 7th of November, Grade 5-6A set out to have fun. Everybody bought their bags and pillows to school while holding the excitement of Port Arthur. But first we had to go on the long journey there on a bus. So we all got ready and headed to the bus. Thankfully, the bus trip was also made part of the excitement thanks to the music and games.
Our first stop was at a park where we all played and ate. Our second stop was Richmond Gaol. While we were exploring the wonders of the Gaol we were also finding the items on our treasure map that we were given at the start.
Our last stop, Port Arthur. We couldn’t hold the excitement any more, we were here! As we got out to get all our luggage, the rain started to get faster. We headed to the cabins and even got to choose our cabin number. As we entered the cabin we saw all the bunk beds and immediately ‘dibs’ what bed we wanted.
After unpacking, a handful of people went up to kitchen and helped unpack.
As we had some fun and laughs between ourselves, time went quickly and it was time for the ghost tour! We went to a number of spooky places. It was really scary!
When we came back we had tacos, and chocolate mousse! We went to sleep in-between taking, games and some giggles.
Next morning on November 8th we had brekkie and did some things at a convict history site, as well as making our very own mini-sized brick, similar to the materials that convicts used. We also went on a boat tour and visited the dog line.
At dinner we had lasagne then a very funny and silly talent show, then had apple crumble with ice-cream for dessert.
Soon we went to bed to get some important sleep for the next bus trip home.
In the morning on November 9th we woke up early, had brekkie, brushed our teeth, got dressed and quickly got packed. On the bus trip home, we stopped at the Ross female factory, then visited a convict cemetery.
Soon we were back at school, thinking of all the amazing things we had done, also, exhausted.
In the end everyone was happy, and kind of sad that it went so quickly.

GRADE 3-6 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
On Tuesday 6th November St.Marys District School held our Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival.
The swimming carnival was very exciting with some great results, especially from our younger students. Work during the Swimming and Water Safety program was very evident with many students attempting the 50m races. We are now seeing the benefits of including our Grade 2 students in the annual program.
Champions are listed below.
It was wonderful to see so many parents turn up to watch their children swimming.
