PRINCIPALS REPORT

The year was 1948; the world was rebuilding from the ravages of a second world war and an influx of European migrants, looking for a better life, impacting on not only the country but our state and town.

Ben Chifley was Prime Minister of Australia; Robert Cosgrove resumed the premiership of Tasmania, acquitted of bribery, conspiracy, and corruption charges; the first Holden motor car came off the assembly line (publicly displayed and named on the 29th November, 1948); cost of Holden sedan: £76; estimated population of Australia: 7,792,465; commonwealth basic wage: £5 19s; migrant intake reached 20,000 a year; St Marys District School had a new building completed. It was modern in design and reflected the growth in the community. David Edward Llewellyn, who was born in St Marys, became a Labor Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1986 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018. He was Deputy Premier from 22nd March 2004 to 5th April 2006. He started Prep at St Marys District School in 1948.

The school has grown from those days to be a centre of educational excellence. Students from St Marys District School have used their education to support access to a diverse range of career pathways. Aside from David Llewellyn, other notable alumni include Dianne Freeman/Principal of Newstead College, Chester Bullock Civil Engineer and director of the company 60tyo, who has been involved in this refurbishment, Pete Cornelius, Scott Targett, Trudy Barnes, Kirk McGiveron, Zach Bennett, Nic Symons, Ferdi Louis, Bong Bong Louis, Shaw Madison (now a Professional Sound Engineer), Kyle Bennett and Saree Salter.

All these individuals and many others in our community have a common interest and that is the welfare of St Marys District School and its students. The capacity of St Marys District School to provide our students with an excellent education is the same today as it was 70 years ago. The world has changed, in some cases for the worst and in others for the better. However, our school community and community spirit has, and will always be, about a learner’s first approach. We have been entrusted with new and upgraded facilities to provide an orderly environment where teaching and learning can excel. Our students historically have proven that it matters not where you come from but what you do that counts!

With challenges come opportunities. Therefore I would like to challenge students in 2019, to take hold of every opportunity presented to you and take ‘Courage’ by accepting challenges and embracing opportunities; ‘Aspire’ to do better by having high expectations and high achievement and ‘Respect’ yourself others, our past and our environment. If we do all these, we will see ‘Growth’ in ourselves by always learning and finding better ways to do things.

Finally, many thanks to all our volunteers this year. Thank you to our “School Op Shop” team led by Janet Drummond and our parent help this year which has been truly appreciated. Special thanks to all our staff and students for their patience and co-operation during the refurbishment. It was extremely testing at times, but what an amazing facility we now have. Our School Association for their generous financial support to our library refurbishment was much appreciated. To Tanya Greenwood for her success in receiving a $10,000 grant that will support our community and school in establishing a community choir in 2019. Also an enormous thank you to Tanya for all her personal support and the support through Building Blocks …..Launching Into Learning, LIFT and Kindergarten programs, without Tanya’s support and innovation many of these opportunities would not have been possible.

A warm welcome to our new Principal for 2019, Carolyn Watson. Happy maternity leave to our new mums, Emily Garth and Hannah Coates and best wishes to the mums to be Ellen Redden, Amanda Hughes and Claire Neyland. Farewell and best wishes to those moving on- Hannah Papworth, Lisa Harrison and Tom Spykers. Farewell and thank you to Mim Woods, who is retiring after 15 years of working as a Teacher Assistant at both St.Marys and Fingal. We wish you a wonderful and fulfilling retirement.

Congratulation to our newly elected Student Representative Council members for 2019

ARTS ON TOUR BACKDROPS

Arts on Tour are celebrating 20 years of Grade 9/10 Drama and Music students, travelling to other schools to perform a chosen play by Robyn Hickey and music by Nic Wardlaw and sets designed by Jill Lewis over the last 11 years.

The 2018 play is ‘Hating Alison Ashley’ and once again a huge thank you needs to be given to the following students who helped paint and create the three sets that go on tour and the huge black folding sets that are needed for the performances:

Chloe Cropp, Indi Tonks, Ethan Parker, Charlotte Harvey, Chloe Malley, Ella Rowntree, Hamish Rowntree, Ayla Johnson, Tiana Cordwell, Alyssa Cook, Jill Lewis (Art Teacher).

GRADE 2-3 ELVES

The students in Grade 2/3 painted bright little elves and then added their faces to complete the picture. They have also made sparkling wreaths decorated with some cedar roses.

KINDERGARTEN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION INQUIRY

The Kindergarten children have been busy this term inquiring into building and construction. We have been exploring questions including: What are buildings made of? What makes a strong and stable building? How can we join materials together?

During this unit, students have explored building in several ways. We have used a range of materials including Duplo, Lego, wooden blocks, bricks, balsa wood, timber, sticks, wire and cardboard. The Kinder students have become very capable at using tools such as saws, hammers, screwdrivers, hole punches, pliers, drills and whittling tools, in a safe and confident manner.

For Outdoor Learning Day students worked together to collect sticks and built a stick hut for our Kinder yard. There was lots of problem solving to do after it blew down and needed re-building!

As a culmination of our inquiry learning, we held a Celebration Day to show our families how clever we are with tools. Students and parents built a large timber Christmas tree to display on our Kindergarten deck. It was fun having a turn on the drill! Students also used their building and making skills to create interesting things, including beautiful decorations to hang on our tree. It looks fabulous! A huge thank you to all of the parents who helped to make the day such a success.

KINDERGARTEN NATUREWORLD EXCURSION

The Kindergarten children had a wonderful day out at East Coast Natureworld.

The students had a tour of the park on the tractor, fed the kangaroos and learnt about many of our Australian native animals. These included: Tasmania devils, echidnas, blue tongue lizards, wombats, tiger snakes, quolls and an array of native birds. A picnic lunch and fun on the climbing equipment and swings, was followed by a sleepy bus ride home!

A big thanks goes to all of our wonderful parent helpers - a fabulous day was had by all!

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM KINDER

GRADE 6 TRANSITION DINNER

By Jessica Squires

On the 29th of November the Grade Sixes got dressed up and prepared for the Grade Six Transition Dinner. As the Grade Sixes arrived everyone was frozen with the looks of each other, some were fancy others not so much. But the looks didn’t matter too much, because what mattered is that we were celebrating our time in Primary.

When everyone arrived we got straight into the dinner, choosing where we wanted to sit. When everyone was comfy and ready our meals started to get served.

Just before dessert it was time for the speeches. Mrs. Williams predicted what our job would be in the future by our personalities. Miss Papworth was saying what her students had achieved and what kind things they have done. Mrs Cook said all the things about Montana Reece and Will Burt she possibly could. Through dessert everyone was saying how funny or nice each other’s speech was, and two cheeky adults had more dessert than they should have.

In the end everyone had a wonderful time and I’m sure that we were all sad for it to end so quickly.

GRADE 5-6 PORT ARTHUR CAMP

5/6B Camp report

One the first day of camp we waited for everyone to get here at St Marys District School. When everyone was here we packed the van with our luggage, then set of to the Fingal Campus. We picked up three Fingal students. Soon after everyone was packed to go, we started driving to Campbelltown for recess, then from Campbelltown we drove to Richmond to have a look at the gaol. In the gaol we were given a treasure map for each group. The first building inside the gaol we looked at was the gaol keepers house, the second building we looked at was the women’s solitary cells where they were locked in. In the cells they had a small bucket where they went to the toilet with a small wooden lid. For their meals they would have a small loaf of bread and a small amount of water. The third building was the men’s solitary. It was the same as the women’s but they did not cook or wash. The fourth building was the activity room, the man trap and the storage of old clothes and cleaning tools.

The fifth area were the separate cells. The sixth area we saw was the cat o’ nine tails stand and the privy. After exploring the gaol for a while we started heading out one by one.

When we were all out we went to the van to get our lunch and money. When we got our things we started walking to the park where we sat down to eat our lunch. After lunch we got our money and went to the Richmond lolly shop. After that we went to the van and went on our way to Eaglehawk Neck, then to the Dog line. At the Dog Line we went to the beach and took off our shoes and socks. After all that we went to the van and drove to the NRMA Port Arthur Cabins and unpacked all our bags in the rooms we were staying in. The teachers got their own cabins and the girls and boys were in separate cabins. Like 5 minutes after all the kids and a teacher unpacked the food for the whole camp then went to the playground for a play. At 6:00pm we had dinner and dessert. At 7:30pm the kids that wanted to go on the Ghost Tour went but there was a child who didn’t want to go. She stayed with Miss Cook while the others went with Mr Kelly. At 10:30pm we got back from the Ghost Tour and went to bed.

On day two we woke up, got dressed and headed over to have breakfast. After breakfast we cleaned up the cabins a bit more and made all our lunches, recess and packed our lunchboxes then went to the playground for another play. Two hours before lunch we got in the van and drove to the Port Arthur historic site. At the site we made bricks and saw interesting things and then we sat down in the shade and ate our burgers for lunch. After lunch we went to the ferry that took us around the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer. After half an hour the ferry came back around to where we started off. Then the teacher took us to the old café where the man shot 32 people dead (The shootout). Then we all walked to the van and drove back to the cabins. On the way back to the cabins from Port Arthur we stopped at a small shop and one of the teachers brought a box of icy poles for everyone but as soon as the box of icy poles were scanned a child grabbed the box of icy poles then all the children ran with her to the van screaming get in the van, and when we go to the van it was locked. Soon after the teacher came out and unlocked the van and then everyone got in and then we drove back to the cabins. When we got to our cabins everyone got out with their bags and went to their own spaces. One of the teachers told us to get ready because we were going to the beach. Some of us went down to the beach with thongs but most of us went down with our regular shoes. When we were finished at the beach we got our change of clothes and went to have a shower. After the showers we got dressed and went to Doo Town which is a town that every house has a sign saying something like Doctor-Doo-Little. We also looked at a blow hole just outside of Doo Town. Like 1 or 2 hours later we were back at the cabins. Then we went for a play again and had tea and dessert then went to bed and fun at night with everyone in our cabin not teachers though.

Day three, we woke up and got dressed for our way home for school. After that we all quickly went up for breakfast. After that we packed up our bags and luggage. Then we started our way back to school and on the way back we stopped at the Female Factory in Ross and then we all ate Kiss Biscuits and Anzac Biscuits and then everyone ate lunch and played Truth or Dare under a tree in the shade because it was hot. About 3 hours later we travelled to Fingal and dropped off some students then went to St Marys.

The people who went was…

  • Teachers: Mr Kelly and Miss Cook
  • Fingal students: Delta, Nicholas and Tyron
  • St Marys students: Isabella, Amali, Ashton, Jimmy, Riley, Marcus and Rebecca

AIR TIME 360

Term 4, Grade 5/6 students from both classes went to Launceston on an excursion to Airtime 360 and McDonald’s. First was the long journey there. Airtime was great. We all had blast. There were so many trampolines and dodge balls. It was amazing to see so many people having fun. Next but not last we went to McDonalds. We all had some delicious food and drinks because everyone brought $20 for food and drinks. But at last we started the long journey back to the familiar place of work and schooling. In my opinion I think that I prefer Airtime.
